Should You Be Home During Exterior Renovation?

How-To Should You Be Home During Exterior Renovation?

When home renovation work is underway, many homeowners aren’t sure whether to stay home. Good news: we’ve got the answer for you.

When Should I Be Home?

We advise that homeowners be present at the beginning and end of their home’s renovation. The main reason to stay away from the active renovation has to do with safety: you could get in the way, walk where it’s not safe, and risk harming yourself or others. However, if you’re comfortable, you can stay home.

On the day of the crew’s arrival, it may be helpful to take the morning off work to prep and plan anything you need with the crew. After that, ideally, the homeowner should stay as scarce as possible for safety and workflow reasons.

If your home is getting an exterior renovation—siding, roofing, gutters—the installation team won’t need access to the inside of your home, so you don’t need to be there.

Tips for Homeowners

We want to help your renovation process go as smoothly as possible.

Know your Project: If you’re getting your windows done, know what you want, and make sure to hire a contractor who can accommodate your style preferences. For example, there are multiple ways to cap windows; sometimes homeowners have a preference. Brush up on your exterior knowledge prior to your renovation.

Children and Pets: Keep children away from the work area, and keep pets crated or in a secure location away from the renovation. Workers may open gates or doors around the property, and the renovation may create debris around the home that you don’t want young children or pets stepping on.

Working From Home: If you work remotely or need to be home the full day, find a room that is the most isolated or separated from the construction. This way, you will be least disturbed by the noise, the installers will leave you alone, and you will be safe, comfortable, yet still present.

Other Logistics

Site Materials: If materials or a dumpster are scheduled for delivery, they will likely be delivered to your driveway. To avoid being blocked in, if you can access street parking or ask to park in your neighbor’s driveway, do so.

Accidents happen: keep outside accessories or valuables away from the construction site.

Look out for Weather: Weather matters a lot during an exterior renovation. For example, if your windows are getting replaced in the winter, you won’t want to be home during the renovation: there will be lots of open holes in the home, and the house can get very cold. The same principle applies in the summer heat, too.
