Best Windows For Energy Efficiency

How-To Best Windows For Energy Efficiency

Choosing windows for your home is a delicate process; many factors come into play, and proper installation is crucial. Every homeowner’s needs are different—the key is choosing windows that are best for you and your home.

Heating and cooling a home isn’t cheap; the more energy-efficient your home is, the more money you can save. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that 25% to 30% of a home’s heating and cooling energy is lost through windows. In older homes with single-pane glass, that number can climb past 40%. Don’t stress; we are here to help.

The Right Glass

Choosing the right window glass matters because it’s where your home loses most of its energy. 85% of a window is made up of glass, so it is important to choose wisely.

Most standard double-pane vinyl windows use two panes of glass, both 2MM thick; this can let noise through and reduce durability.

At POWER, we want to make sure your home is properly protected; one of our glass packages includes a 5MM outer pane and a 3MM inner pane. With glass as thick as a car windshield, it keeps out unwanted noise and improves security.

Our double-pane windows are also Low-E, meaning they include a thin metallic coating that helps reflect heat. This helps keep your home’s temperature stable — and helps you avoid paying more to heat or cool your home.

POWER uses an exclusive glass called Heat Shield; our Heat Shield technology helps your home retain energy: it keeps winter cold out and heat in, and summer heat out and cool air in. Heat Shield looks like other glass, but it has three microscopic layers of silver. Silver is the best reflector of light, besides gold. In addition to the silver, our Heat Shield glass is filled with argon gas. Argon gas is 6x denser than air and acts as an insulator, blocking any additional energy loss.

Whether you’re considering buying windows through POWER or another manufacturer or service provider, be sure to look out for wider-pane glass with low emissivity and argon gas qualities.

Framing

When choosing a window frame, you have a few options. Metal and aluminum frames offer the least insulation, and while wood is a pretty good insulator, it’s prone to moisture damage and warping. Vinyl is now a popular choice for window frames because it is maintenance-free.

Most windows have hollow frames, meaning there is no insulation and more energy transfer through the home—AKA, energy loss. In addition, hollow frames can create unnecessary echo and noise pollution.

Some windows made of hollow vinyl can begin to bow or sag over time at the meeting rail — the rail in the middle of the window. When this happens, the window can no longer lock properly. POWER’s meeting rails are inserted with a steel reinforcement, adding structural integrity to the window — there will be no worrying about locking issues.

At POWER, we use foam insulation in our window frames, which helps to reduce energy loss and keep out unwanted noise.

Manufacturing and Proper Installation

When it comes to fastening the window at the corners, most companies offer mechanically fastened corners, meaning it is simply screwed together. This can cause the window to loosen over time, leading to water infiltration, drafts, and difficulty opening and closing.

At POWER, we offer fusion-weld corners: we form a molecular bond at the corner, turning the window’s weakest point into its strongest. This installation will help prevent air and water infiltration.

You can buy an amazing window, but if it isn’t installed properly, it is a waste.

All our windows are custom-made, so they fit your space perfectly. Our specialized, highly skilled window installers also use adhesive on the exterior and interior of the windows to further prevent drafts and moisture from getting into your home.
