5 Must-Haves for the DIY Dad

How-To 5 Must-Haves for the DIY Dad

DIY projects require a lot of gear and tools. To help make projects run smoothly, provide homeowners with the right safety precautions, and keep things organized, here are our top recommendations for the DIY Dad:

Safety glasses

Safety always comes first! Opt for protective safety glasses to prevent any eye injuries from common DIY tasks. Nowadays, safety glasses come in a variety of comfortable styles (that fit any personal aesthetic!) so homeowners can pick the exact pair they need depending on the project.

Noise reducing hearing protection

Anytime you work with power tools, wear noise reducing headphones or ear muffs to protect your hearing. If you go with a reasonably priced option (around $35-50), you can ensure proper protection, without being too upset if they accidentally break while you’re working. Prolonged exposure to high decibel sounds, which are produced by many tools, can be harmful to your longterm hearing.

Knee pads or kneeling pads

Many DIY projects require floor work, which after some time can prove to be uncomfortable for many homeowners and DIY dads. Adding knee pads or a kneeling pad to your gear collection can offer much-needed protection when it comes to construction projects, gardening, installing flooring, painting baseboards, or other home improvement tasks.

Knee pads come in a variety of options, including foam, gel pads, or hard plastic, which can all be useful depending on the project or surface you’re working on.

Wet/dry vacuum

A wet/dry vacuum — also widely known as a shop vac — is a must-have for homeowners who complete a lot of DIY projects. These vacuums are much more heavy duty than a regular household vacuum, and can handle significant debris, clunky and hazardous leftovers like nails, and even damp areas or wet spills.

Be sure to keep up with routine cleaning of the vacuum itself and its filter to ensure it works properly for the long haul and it isn’t clogged or debris-filled. Pro Tip: Remember to take the air filter out before switching to the wet vac projects!

Headlamp

Working in low light conditions can be damaging — think of how much easier it might be to make mistakes that lead to serious injury or accidents. A headlamp or headlight offers direct exposure and illumination of your work environment, and leaves you hands-free to focus on the task at hand.

Tool organizer or storage

If you’re DIY-ing on the regular or are a true DIY dad, you’ll quickly find yourself owning many tools. To make sure you can easily find what you’re looking for at a moments notice, investing in an organizer box, case, cart, or bag will ensure nothing goes missing when you need it most.

The type of storage you’ll need will depend on the quantity and size of your tool collection, as well as your home’s spacial constraints. For those that complete a multitude of projects, investing in a larger backyard shed might provide the amount of storage space you need.
